Launch of Ha Long Bay Ecomuseum - Cua Van Floating Cultural Center Project
For promoting the sustainable development of Ha Long Bay - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and safeguarding the culture and livelihoods of the local fishing communities, a Floating Cultural Center will be constructed adjacent to the fishing village of Cua Van to enhance heritage preservation and community development. UNESCO provides technical support and the Government of Norway has granted financial assistance to the project.

Viet Nam gets fifth World Heritage Site - Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park
UNESCO has declared Phong Nha - Khe Bang National Park in central Quang Binh province a world heritage site. The inscription of all together 24 new sites around the world was carried out by World Heritage Committee, during its 27th session, at UNESCO Headquarters.

National Forum on Quality Education and Life Skills, Hanoi, Viet Nam ( 23-25 September 2003)
Statistics suggest fewer students are dropping out or repeating classes, according to Nguyên Van Trang, Director of the Secondary Education Department in the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training. But, Trang commented, the quality of education has yet to reach regional or world standards. "Students are bad at creative thinking, practical skills and self-reliant abilities," he said.

Reports: Vietnamese cultural approach to HIV/AIDS prevention, support and care
Two separate research studies conducted in selected areas of Ho Chi Minh City, and Quang Ninh Province show how different cultural aspects have an major impact on HIV/AIDS prevention and care in Viet Nam. This both in an negative and positive sense. Discrimination is still unfortunately something most HIV/AIDS infected and affected people have to face.

Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity Proclaimed
On Friday, November 7, 2003, UNESCO Director-General Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura announced in a proclamations ceremony held in Paris at UNESCO Headquarters, that Nha Nhac Vietnamese Court Music had been proclaimed as one of a group of twenty-eight Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Reaching out to the un-reached - Education for All and Community Learning Centers in the Central Highlands and Binh Phuoc Province (Da Lat, 13-15 November 2003)
UNESCO Hanoi and Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) hosted a project inception meeting in Da Lat for the project on Community Learning Centers (CLCs) for the Central Highlands provinces and Binh Phuoc province. Hence, following the signing ceremony that took place on 17 October , 2003, the meeting marked the official launch for the project that aims at improving access to quality education through non-formal education in four Central Highland provinces and neighboring Binh Phuoc province.

Roundtable on the Information Society (WSIS event) Hanoi
The National Roundtable was held as part of Viet Nam’s preparation for the first phase of World Summit on the Information Society, that is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 10-12 December 2003. The Roundtable, organized by the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, in collaboration with UNESCO Office Hanoi, provided a good opportunity for stakeholders and players in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to share information and views on the Summit itself and to talk about the current situation and the shape and direction of the future Information Society of Vietnam
National Workshop on Preventing the Illicit Traffic in Cultural Property
Hanoi, December 8-9, 2003
The National Capacity-building Workshop from 8-9th December 2003 brings together national experts who work with moveable cultural property with Mr. Etienne Clement, the co-writer and co-editor of the UNESCO Resource Handbook. Together, the group will share experiences and use the new translated Vietnamese publication to raise the awareness and importance of adequate documentation and inventory making of cultural property. Further to this, case-study details and further discussions will allow for follow-up and future recommendations concerning the protection of Viet Nam’s cultural property.
Exhibition: Traditional Crafts in the Classroom, From Saturday 13th December 2003 onwards
Venue: Pottery classroom at the Viet Nam Museum of Ethnology, Nguyen Van Huyen Street, Cau Giay District, Ha Noi
The exhibition is a concrete outcome of a project that has given basic skills training in traditional ceramic crafts to 50 school children aged 10 to 14 years. Traditional Crafts as a Window to Job Opportunities for the Poorest Youth is a co-operation project between UNESCO, Viet Nam Museum of Ethnology and master artisans of Phu Lang Village.
