Green Fields
Have you ever been into green fields ?
Some say yes, some say no, others (myself included) remain silent. Silence is golden.
Reasons ? For I do not understand the question very clearly.
Erm.. “green fields”, perhaps, is an undefined term (to me, at least).
What does it mean by “green fields”. Are they fields whose colour is green ? Where are they? Whose are they? And what does it mean by “ever been to green fields” ? Is it a literary or figurative manner of speaking?
Phew… what am I saying ?
Green fields, as in Green Fields sung by The Brothers Four, were not really fields that we could put our bare foot on and leave behind the footsteps. Perhaps, they were the old days, kissed by fate and blessed by God. They were times when we kepts our heads up high, dancing down the street and humming the song “la vie en rose”. Perhaps, they were treasures in our hearts. They were the stories that we can always wholeheartedly retell. They were things that we a moment had and forever lost. They were things that we utterly want to trace back. We wish to had those golden time again. And we never have our wish fulfilled. What’s gone is gone. Anyway, it’s disappearance of “green fields” that make us grown up. Anyway, it’s disappearance that make them magnificent and invaluable. If “green fields” was always there, then they would have been forever green fields – the fields whose colour is green. But once they’re gone, once they cruelly terribly heartlessly was turned into dust and ashes, they left the fields in our souls growing. Green fields – the precious and the gone-now things - are perhaps parts that build up our viewpoints in life.
I don’t know Green Fields composed by Richard Clayderman. I only know him as a great Pianist with his magic fingers on the keys performed so many sensational, romantic songs. He also really touched our soul in the song Green fields. The lyrics opens was so wonderful, rich of nature scene and very descriptive. We can say he used his words like a great artist with a brush painted a beautiful, colourful picture
Once there were green fields,
Kissed by the sun.
Once there were valleys,
Where rivers used to run.
Once there were blue skies,
With white clouds high above.
once they were part of,
An everlasting love.
We were the lovers who
Strolled through Green Fields.,
The songs goes slowly. Now we hurry for what. We hurry to where ? That’s tough to answer, right… so the songs goes slowly, really slowly. For me, whenever this Green Fields starts playing (I always set Shuffle Mode for my mp3 player, hehe), I like to lie in bed and let the blanket covering up to my neck. My teddy bears are with me. I close my eyes and see scenes passing by, the very mild green fields, the very warm Mr. Sun, the very peaceful rivers (but I prefer brooks!), the wide blue friendly sky with its beloved soft shining white clouds, suddenly the figure of Him emerges. He’s cute, from every angle. Luckily or unluckily, it’s a fact that there’s no one else but me on this earth says so. But in my eyes, he’s cute. He’s admirable. He’s adorable. He’s here. However, the songs doesn’t stop but keeps going on, very slowly though. The songs goes on.
Richard led us from the bright open to a sorrow in the winter chill. He started from Spring and the fields were green and kissed by the sun (excellent metaphor). He characterised the sun and the fields as a lover couple. Sadly winter came with it’s cruel cold.
Green fields are gone now,
Parched by the sun.
Gone from the valleys,
Where rivers used to run.
Gone with the cold wind,
That swept into my heart.
Gone with the lovers,
Everything’s changing. One by one. The deadly cold swept and took away any live on its trace. Richard wondered:
Where are the green fields,
That we used to roam?
This was the answer in the form of a question. The words had a grudge against the ruthless winter. However that we only touch the skin of the true meaning of the lyric. Richard raised us the nature of this ephermeral world. We have love and we loose it like the four seasons, the circle of life. Every one knows that He didn’t say any thing new he just put into the lyrics, gave it the tune, in the so talented way to make us suddenly realise - the already known – the temporary nature of the world. –nay còn mai mất
Yes, there’s nothing new here. We’ve experienced from time to time the come and go of things and people around us. In fact, we’re experts in saying hello and goodbye. Life offers us something, and it’ll take that away anyway. Life has trained us well, hasn’t it ? With the passage of time and the training process, we can be calm sometimes, but most of the time we still can’t help going crazy with that cruel unreasonable unsupportive behavior! What kind of behavior is that! Don’t life know that there are times that SOMETHING means EVERYTHING to us ? Doesn’t life know that it’d be so compassionate when it could takes all of the rest except of THAT SOMETHING ?
Anyway, shouting is not really a solution. To be more specific, there’s no solution. That’s it.
I'll never know what,
Made you run away.
How can I keep searching
When dark clouds hide the day..
I only know there's,
Nothing here for me.
Nothing in this wide world,
Left for me to see
Also in this visible world Richard roam to search for the lover. It is so wonderful we all seem looking for the love one, the another half. That is also the human nature, we are born to love and to be loved, every one roam for searching. However what’s awkward destiny – số phận trớ trêu- we all have to keep searching in the dark ‘When dark clouds hide the day..’ . I strongly believe with him in this wide world we have a very slim chance to find the true love, therefore he moans nothing for him to see…
Hm.. sometimes something is everything. So that life takes away something from us can mean that it takes everything. So logically, we have nothing left. Ah!! This’s really interesting. Let’s do it again!
We have something.
This something is really everything to us.
Life takes this something.
Which leads to the fact that it indeed takes our everything
Then we have nothing.
We wonder “where’s my everything?”
Actually we still enjoy life, even after our “everything” is gone
In a different way, though.
We still can manage.
We then realise that something is really not everything
So if life takes that something
We still have some other thing
Which means that not everything is gone
Though our hearts still badly ache when we think of the something that’s gone…
And so life teaches us that
Something is not everything
And life also teaches us that
Everything, in some cases, is just nothing.
So if we lose our everything,
It means we have never lost a thing.
So if we have nothing
It may mean we already have something or even everything.
So no worries whether we have something, everything, or nothing
We still can manage.
We are not frightened.
We are just sad…
We just have a few regrets…
Regrets, in turn, are just something
Which are sometimes also everything
And some other times are really nothing.
Erm… My professor once said that I am incapable of thinking logically. You do not know my professor, but after you go through this long-and-no-main-point-and-truly-nonsensical-and-circular-and-bla bla bla post, maybe you’ll find that what he said was definitely a statement of truth and that my everything was just some irrationally stuff and not knowingly done.
No matter how terrible my writing may be, I love the song Green Fields, and maybe so do you. And that’s enough for us to sit down and share our thoughts and feeling together, right ? I truly welcome any of your comments, expansions, clarifications, and opinions.
